Romance Versus Mystery

Awhile back I was talking to author Linda Weaver Clark about her new fall release, MAYAN INTRIGUE, and she had a lot to say about writing romances and mystery. I had just returned from a trip to the Western Caribbean where I had the opportunity to walk through some of Mexico's famous Mayan ruins, and I was touched. There is a spirit in those ancient places I can't quite put a finger on, but like Linda, I have to confess I had some story ideas floating around in my own head. Here's what Linda had to say about romance and mystery writing. Her book is out today so check it out and let me know what you think.

Romance Versus Mystery

I have written five historical romance novels but have changed to mystery. The writing process between romance and mystery is quite a change with a completely different mind set. It’s so different from telling a love story. With romance, you plan out the plot around the meeting of a couple. As you write, you develop some sort of charisma between the characters, making the reader feel excited that one day they're going to hit it off and fall in love. You, as the reader, know what the outcome will be. But with a mystery, the reader is in the dark. The author has to come up with a plot that no one knows about until towards the end of the story and hope they haven’t figured it out. In a mystery, you may or may not allow your reader to know who the bad guys are, according to whether it’s just a mystery or mystery suspense. Do you know the difference between a mystery and a mystery suspense novel? In a mystery, when a knock is heard at the door, the reader doesn't know who's behind it. With mystery suspense, the reader knows who's behind the door and yells to the heroine, "Don't open the door!"

Anasazi Intrigue is the first book in a mystery adventure series called “The Adventures of John and Julia Evans.” It’s about a devastating flood that takes out several homes in a small town, the importance of preserving ancient artifacts, and a few puzzling and mysterious events. Julia is a reporter, and when she finds out about a possible poison spill that kills some fish and neighbor's pets, she has a feeling that something isn’t quite right. Before she realizes what is happening, Julia finds out that this incident is much bigger and more dangerous than she thought. With dead fish, a devastating flood, and miscreants chasing John and Julia, they have their hands full.

Artifact theft is a very intriguing subject. That’s why I call it the Intrigue series. In my research, I found that archaeological thievery is becoming more and more of a problem every year. Did you know that looting is only second to selling illegal drugs? While researching the second book in this series, Mayan Intrigue, my eyes were opened to the problems they have in southern Mexico. When an ancient ruin is discovered, it doesn’t take long for thieves to take it apart. The reason why is because the Mayas used astrological alignments when planning their city. Looters have learned the layout of the Mayan cities so they know where to dig. With this knowledge, they can loot a sacred temple in a few days. I also found that artifact theft in Mexico has been taken over by drug dealers from Columbia. In other words, since organized crime has taken over, there is also an increase of violence.

Mayan Intrigue will be released on August 30th and I’m having a week long celebration with a book give-away at my Blog at http://lindaweaverclarke.blogspot.com. Mayan Intrigue is about the discovery of a priceless artifact that puts Julia’s life in great danger. While on assignment for the newspaper, John and Julia try to enjoy a romantic vacation among the Mayan ruins, but when Julia accidentally comes upon a couple suspicious men exchanging an item, she quickly turns and leaves but it’s too late. Before John and Julia realize what's going on, they find themselves running for their lives through the jungles of the Yucatan. Spotlight on K. Dawn Byrd

So school has started, and I'm reorganizing the priorities like mad. One thing I can always count on though, is finding out about another great e-author who offers wonderful getaways with her books. This weekend I'm spotlighting K. Dawn Byrd. Read on to find out more...

Welcome to The Balanced Writer, K. Dawn. Please tell us about yourself!

I write inspirational romance and romantic suspense. Queen of Hearts, a WWII romantic suspense released in April and was Desert Breeze Publishing's bestselling novel for the month. Killing Time, a contemporary romantic suspense released August 1st, also with Desert Breeze Publishing.

I'm an avid blogger and give away several books per week on my blog at www.kdawnbyrd.blogspot.com, most of which are signed by the authors. I'm also the moderator of the popular facebook group, Christian Fiction Gathering

When not reading or writing, I enjoy spending time with my husband of 14 years, walking our dogs beside a gorgeous lake near our home, and plotting the next story waiting to be told.

There is something about an author and her pets. Tell us about your latest release?

Here's the blurb from the publisher:

Mindy McLaurin, thinks it's the end of the world when she's incarcerated on trumped-up embezzlement charges. While in jail, she investigates the death of an inmate who allegedly died of an overdose. Mindy suspects foul play when her cellmate dies and she learns that both women had ingested the same drug. Mindy trusts no one, including Drew Stone, the handsome counselor she can’t stop thinking about. She faces many challenges, including constant interrogation by the Major and emotional abuse from the other inmates. Upon release, someone is stalking her and framing her for the murder. Can she prove to Counselor Stone that she’s innocent of all charges before she loses him forever?

Dare I ask? What genres do you enjoy?

I love romantic suspense and that's why I write it. Unless there's a lot of romantic tension in romance books, they fall flat for me. That's why I like the added element of suspense...it keeps the page turning.

So what is your writing schedule like?

I work a full-time job Monday-Friday 7:30am to 4:00pm and also work a lot of 12 hour on-call shifts on weekends. I squeeze in writing when and where I can when I'm not working my day job.

Another full time job? I don't know how you do it.
How does your family feel about your writing?

My husband is very supportive and always has been. He even helps with some plotting.

I think that's kinda romantic your husband helps with plotting. How sweet. Tell me, where do you see yourself in five years?

Wherever God chooses to take me. I gave my life and writing up to Him long ago, so whatever happens is his will.

Now, something special about you?

I own two hairless Chinese Crested dogs and am head over heels in love with the little guys!

Our Children, Our Talents

There is nothing more beautiful than seeing the talents in our children cultivated. As a parent, it has been a pleasure of mine to help my kids find something to do that they are good at and that they enjoy. I grew up with athletic brothers and played a few sports myself. Imagine my surprise when I realized the four children I was raising had no interest in those kinds of things. Helping them find their own niches in life has been a journey of exploration and a fun one. We have dabbled in Little League baseball, swimming, piano lessons, karate, and scouting. My kids have found happiness in the arts and music programs in our educational system, especially Marching Band. We've tried a little gymnastics and some swimming. There are so many wonderful opportunities in this life. Why not take them?

Recently, I heard the news that one of my former cub scouts was going to be competing in the Junior Olympics. I've never been so proud. If you would like to learn more about this amazing young man, only nine-years-old, please check out his blog and please consider donating to help him pay his expenses.

Last, I wanted to share an amazing music video from a seven-year-old little girl that will leave you speechless. She has a beautiful voice and angelic smile. Is it not proof enough, that children deserve every opportunity to fly, no matter what path they choose?
