The History of You: Ancestry Search Giveaway

February is the month of love, and love of family has been on my mind this season.

My husband and I are convinced we carry the memories and experiences of our ancestors in our DNA, along with all those genes. For example, the first time I ever drove through Iowa, it was early in the morning of a long road trip. As I watched the sun rise over the beautiful green cornfields, I suddenly became emotional, as if I'd just come home. At the time it seemed silly, but I was sure I'd been in Iowa before someway, somehow.

Years later as my genealogy search began, I found out that one of my mother's grandparents and a long line of ancestors had lived and farmed in the beautiful Iowa countryside.

My husband had the same experience last summer visiting Nauvoo, Illinois. He came home and did some research and discovered his ancestors passed through this lovely riverside town.

As frustrating as some of society's ideals seem to have become in recent years, one thing seems to hold steady: the love our family and those who came before us. Understanding where you came from can bring peace, understanding, and a great love for our families. Just as we are the sturdy tree trunks of today, our ancestors root us to our values and the past. Our children and children-to-be are branches that will spread and fan out to extend for generations. It helps the idea we are a one world family make sense.

With about 20 years of genealogy research and experience behind me, I'm currently taking another course to brush up on the new available resources. This month, I'm giving away a free ancestry search to one of The Balanced Writer's followers. With any luck, we'll grow your family tree, and you'll learn more about the history of you.

I've been meaning to get back into my genealogy for awhile, so I'd really love to win this.

Knowing who your ancestors are and where they came from is very important. As administrator of a family group on Facebook, I have tried to get as many family members as I can to participate by posting old family pictures, sharing more recent ones and sharing any family history and recipes, that they can. My cousin, a fellow enthusiast, and I sometimes feel, that it is like pulling teeth to get more members to contribute. She laughs because she can't believe the one person in the family, who has no children, is the most enthusiastic in wanting to preserve the past. But we feel it's worth it, when we get young teenage grandchildren of other cousins to ask us about our scattered family and generations past. Our goal is to share our knowledge with as many family members as we can. Thank you for the giveaway. It's an amazing prize and one that can be passed down and literally be enjoyed forever.
